Please join us for a workshop exploring the implications of distance education and social media for spiritual formation. This is not a “how to” session; rather, the goal is to consider the implications of distance learning for the practice of spiritual formation and the teaching of spirituality. Among the questions the panel and discussion will address are the following: How do distance learning and the culture that emerges from it shape the work of spiritual formation? What opportunities and challenges does distance learning bring for relationships among instructors and students, in and outside the classroom? What is the relationship between the contemplative life and distance-learning pedagogies? What distance-learning practices can introduce spiritual directees and students to the history of spiritual practices and textual traditions?

The 2013 Presidential Address by Joseph Driskill (Pacific School of Religion)
Georgia Harkness, a life-long Methodist and the first woman to be elected to the American Theological Society, recognized that prayer and prophetic witness were intimately linked. Her own “dark night of the soul” led her to recognize within mainline Protestant denominations the need for a recovery of spiritual practices, including what she called “a piety of radiance and illumination.” Please join us to learn about this compelling and often overlooked source of wisdom for our time.
